Citing water crisis, weather, Thelma Fay's Cafe announces it will close
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Blaming the recent water crisis and winter weather, Thelma Fay's Deli on Washington Street announced it plans to close on Thursday.
The deli and restaurant, also known as Thelma Fay's Cafe, made the announcement Tuesday morning on its Facebook page.
"This year has not been a good one," the post said. "From the water crisis to the unexpected weather.. one disaster for business after another. Financially i just cant recover from this."
It said Thursday would be the restaurant's last official day for business. The post also said the restaurant would not be accepting coupons or gift certificates.
Artists who have had work displayed at the store have been asked to make arrangements to pick it up. If it's not picked up soon, it will be placed in storage.
Ernie Lazernick, Joe Cragg and Dave Lomax opened the restaurant across the street from CAMC General Hospital in August 2010. It featured a host of deli sandwiches, pitas, gyros, soups and salads, as well as full meals like meatloaf, eggplant Parmesan, roast pork loin and chicken teriyaki.
One of the sandwiches, the "Monster," was dubbed Charleston's biggest sandwich. Priced at $15.99, it contained more than one pound of corned beef, pastrami, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese on rye bread with Thousand Island dressing.
The trio turned the restaurant over to new owner and manager Michael Fink in 2013.
When reached by phone Tuesday, Fink said he did not want to discuss the want to discuss the closing and asked for privacy in the matter.
