Halloween: Haunted outings around the state
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The gazz has received several notices about haunted houses in West Virginia this Halloween season. Here's a look at the frightful sites:
| BECKLEY: There's "Terror on the Tams" at Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park with a tale of college kids and the zombies they encounter while lost in the West Virginia woods. Hours are 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Oct. 21-22, 28-29 and 31. Adult tickets are $10; children (12 and under) are $5.
Tours are limited to 10-12 people. Those under age 18 must have a parent to sign a liability waiver. Moonlight ziplining is available for $25. Call 877-683-9240.
| CHARLESTON: Kanawha Players has the Dark Moon Sanctuary, a federally-funded home for feral creatures and wayward monsters, at its theater on 309 Beauregard St. Hours are 7 to 10 p.m. tonight and Oct. 20 and 7 to midnight Friday, Saturday and Oct. 21. Admission is $8 with $1 off if you bring a food or cleaning item donation for Sojourners. Children under 13 must have adult supervision. Visit www.kanawhaplayers.org.
| HUNTINGTON: The 13th annual Spooktacular, featuring more than 20 rides and attractions, runs 6 to 11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in October at Camden Park. Admission is $16 on Fridays and $19 on Saturdays. Call 866-8CAMDEN.
| MILTON: The corn maize turns haunted from dark to close (10 p.m.) Oct. 21-22 and 28-29. Admission is $9 with no discounts or reservations permitted. Call 304-634-MAZE.
| MINERAL WELLS: The New Era School Museum at Mineral Wells Elementary School gets haunted from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 28 and 29. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students. The Mid Ohio Valley Ghost Hunters will tell stories around the campfire on Oct. 29. Call 304-481-4752.
| MOUNDSVILLE: The West Virginia Penitentiary is transformed into a Dungeon of Horrors every Friday through Sunday in October and on Halloween night. Tours leave every 15 minutes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased online. Not recommended for children under 12. Visit www.wvpentours.com.
| WESTON: It's "Bedlam" at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum after a demented doctor has turned his wards into primitive, inhuman souls or loyal servants helping to fulfill his sadistic vision. Tour hours are dark to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and dark to midnight Friday and Saturday through Oct. 31.

| WINFIELD: The Haunted Barn by Lee's Studio of Dance blends gory props, high-tech animatronics and actors to scare visitors for the eighth straight year. Hours are 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 and 28-29. Admission is $8 or $7 with a canned food donation. The barn is located on Rt. 35 across from Shawnee Estates.
