'Cornered' tells tales of bullies, bullied

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- In every school, there is a bully. Of course, for every bully, there has to be at least one victim, maybe more. Have you ever wondered what goes on in the mind of the victim, or even the bully? Have you ever wondered how they came to be like that?In "Cornered: 14 Stories of Bullying and Defiance," you delve into the minds of both the bully and the bullied. You learn what could be going through the mind of the person who rules the school or that kid who hides in the bathroom during lunch. The book, edited by Rhoda Belleza with a forward by Chris Crutcher, includes stories by 14 authors in the young adult genre. Each author brings a voice to the idea of bullying. Not all of the stories are possible (a few have some fantastical ideas), but they all delve into the realm of bullying. Each story has a different setting as well. The kids are bullied at school, home and other places. Each writer in "Cornered" has a different style and a different voice. This works well, since each one tells a very different story.
The experiences in "Cornered" could describe the life of someone you know. They could even describe you, without you knowing it.Reading "Cornered" could really open your eyes to the world around you. It may make you realize some things that may change you or how you feel about others. As Belleza explains in her introduction, the kids being bullied aren't always the only ones. The bullies could be abused at home, making them want to abuse someone else. It is a vicious cycle, and the reason that "Cornered" was written. The intent of "Cornered" is to help put a stop to bullying. "Maybe you'll reach out to people you love, ask them to listen, and be their support system as you learn how their experiences have shaped them," Belleza writes in the introduction. When you read "Cornered," you might just learn something about yourself. You'll only know if you're brave enough to read it and find out.
