'Radio Free Charleston' for the holidays

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The latest episode of "Radio Free Charleston," a 2012 Christmas special, is now online at the PopCult blog. Filmed at the Marx Toy Museum in Moundsville, the episode features music from the Charleston Gay Men's Chorale, Lee Harrah and Pepper Fandango, "MARY: A Rock Opera" and Prank Monkey.Also in this episode is the Ghost of Animation Past and a holiday message from Razor Sharp Studios and Burt Flemming, filmed especially for Radio Free Charleston on the set of "Zombie Babies 2." There's also a quick musical tour of the toy museum, which is open Tuesday through Saturday until Dec. 29, when they close until SpringThe first musical number sees the "RFC" debut of the Charleston Gay Men's Chorale, an 18-voice powerhouse who you'll see and hear sing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" at a rehearsal for its recent holiday concert.
A normal person wouldn't think to pair up local metal legend Lee Harrah with Charleston's "angry chick with a banjo," Pepper Fandango, but, says "RFC" host Rudy Panucci, "I never said I was normal. I came up with the idea of recording a duet between the two on the song 'Baby, It's Cold Outside,' and remarkably enough, they both went along with it. "The Contemporary Youth Arts Company's "MARY: A Rock Opera," is a Charleston tradition. This year, the show had dual casts, and so "RFC" presents "The Trio (Lord Of Mercy)," which unites six voices from both casts: Lo Mallory, Susanna Tucker, Maddy Gourevitch, Susanna Morris, Katie Shaver and Rowan Maher.The show concludes with Prank Monkey (Johnny Compton, Jamie Skee, and Mike Vandergriff) taking on the holiday classic, "The Chipmunk Song," live at The Blue Parrot. This is a timeless musical pairing the likes of which has not been seen since David Bowie teamed up with Bing Crosby.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
