Social action plays
Three shows remain in the Contemporary Youth Arts Company week of social-action plays. They are "The Girls Room," dealing with date rape, at 7 p.m. Thursday; "Gone Tomorrow," about HIV, at 8 p.m. Thursday and "A Service for Jeremy Wong," chronicling the aftermath of a gay student's murder, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.All performances are at the Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers St. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. Professional actress and performance coach Pamela Chabora will host workshops on comedy and vocal acting techniques at the Alban Arts Center on Saturday. The comedy session runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and teaches everything from physical comedy to the comedy of menace. The vocal acting session runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon and teaches basic techniques for vocal characterization that are healthy and voice building.The Alban is located at 65 Olde Main St., St. Albans. The Contemporary Youth Arts Company will hold auditions for the new Dan Kehde play, "Western Civ," at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers St. The drama, about the loss of innocence during the anti-war demonstrations of the 1960s, runs March 14-17 and 21-23.A large cast of actors ages 13-25 is required. The Montclaire String Quartet presents "With Love, MSQ" at 3 p.m. Sunday at the University of Charleston's Erma Byrd Gallery (in Riggleman Hall).
The program features two works by quartet members -- Bernard Di Gregorio's "Love Letters" and Anton Shelepov's Suite for Strings -- as well as Mendelssohn's Octet in E Flat Major, Opus 20.The quartet also includes Amelia Chan and Andrea Di Gregorio. They'll be joined by Jennifer Wood, Margie Cooper, Ian Jesse and Kimberly Graham.
