Saxton's Cornet Band recreates the sound, appearance and conduct of Civil War era brass bands.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Touring brass bands were popular in the Antebellum/Civil War era. Saxton's Cornet Band delivers a historically accurate performance of the sound, appearance and conduct of those bands. It takes its name from a popular and long-lived ensemble that performed in Kentucky from before the Civil War into the 20th century. The group's brass instruments include over-the-shoulder horns, which helped focus the sound to the rear where troops were marching.See the band in the Community Music Association's final concert of the season at 3 p.m. Sunday at Riggleman Hall at the University of Charleston. Tickets are $35 for adults, $10 for college students and $5 for youths 18 and under. Call 304-744-1400 or visit www.communitymusicassociation.com
