'12 Years a Slave' opening locally
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- On Friday, "12 Years a Slave," an epic historical drama that has earned reviews and Oscar buzz, opens locally at Park Place Stadium Cinemas downtown Charleston and Marquee Cinemas at Southridge.
The film adapts an 1853 autobiography by Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into slavery. It is helmed by "Shame" director Steve McQueen and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup, plus Michael K. Williams, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson and Paul Giamatti.
"The film is both brutal to watch and stunning to contemplate, powerfully challenging audiences -- particularly white audiences -- to examine their consciences," wrote reviewer Colin Covert of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
