CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The nonprofit group Cafe a la Fikr is accepting submissions of spoken word poetry, essays, paintings or drawings through March 15 for its youth art contest. Entrants must be between 14 and 20 years old and live in the U.S. Written works must be in English. According to contest rules, "Performances should creatively and powerfully convey a message on Muslim societal responsibilities or a humanitarian message that develops social awareness and activism for peace and justice. We strongly recommend that the performances educate and inspire action around at least one area of the social causes." Finalists will present works on the Café Arts stage at the Embassy Suites, 300 Court St., from 2 to 5 p.m. March 30. A panel of judges will determine winners based on quality, content, presentation, creativity and originality. The Café Artisan grand prize winner receives $2,000.
