CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Junior League of Charleston can claim some successes in its 89-year history.Over the years, the group of volunteer women in their 20s and 30s have helped build a housing project, a shelter for runaway youths, a facility for families of sick children, health clinics and a children's museum. The League is now in the process of deciding its next projects and will pay for them through its fundraiser this year -- "Building Community Over Cocktails" -- from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Suite 301 at Appalachian Power Park."We're all over this valley," commented Tara Martin, vice president of membership for the League, in listing the group's volunteer efforts.
Last year, she said the Junior League worked with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and CAMC Women and Children's Hospital. The League supported dinners and support groups for parents with children in the unit. For the next project, Martin said the committee is again looking at the issue of childhood obesity, which it tackled in 2006 with Kids in the Kitchen. "We went into the elementary schools to teach children about portion size" and other healthy living subjects, she said.
She said Junior League in recent years has volunteered at Manna Meal, serving food to the hungry at the downtown soup kitchen, and working in the Manna Meal garden. The League has been involved with the Gabriel project and the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Clubs. The "Community Over Cocktails" event "is a great way to get to know JLC and its community agencies," says a news release from the League. The evening includes cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction and boutique-style shopping with booths selling jewelry, accessories, handbags and home goods.A gift certificate to Café Cimino Country Inn in Sutton for a one-night stay with complimentary breakfast will be the raffle prize. The silent auction includes seven-night stays at three Caribbean resorts, a stay at Mountaineer Casino, fitness packages at CrossFit, Curves, Brickhouse Cardio and a YMCA boot camp, and gift certificates for restaurants, math tutoring and Cass Scenic Railroad.Tickets are $25 in advance and at the door.
