One-act at Adaland Mansion
PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The one-act play "Frog Songs" will be presented July 15 at Adaland Mansion, near Philippi.The play by Jean Battlo, of McDowell County, imagines a meeting between 19th-century writers Emily Dickinson and Henry David Thoreau.It will be performed following the 2 p.m. high tea at the historic mansion. PITTSBURGH -- The Carnegie Science Center will offer visitors the chance to go behind the scenes of USS Requin, a Cold War-era submarine docked on the Ohio River, and tour areas rarely seen by the general public.Requin behind-the-scenes "Tech Tours" will take place on select Sundays from 9 to 11 a.m. July 15 and 29 and Aug. 12 and 26. PITTSBURGH -- BikeFest, a 15-day community celebration featuring more than 70 bicycling-related events in Pittsburgh, will feature a new car-free section bike ride called Pedal Pittsburgh.Stretches of Pittsburgh's historic neighborhood streets will be car-free on Aug. 5 for this first-of-its-kind community Pedal Pittsburgh bike ride. One-to-18 mile beginner routes, 30-mile intermediate and 100-mile advanced routes will take riders through numerous Pittsburgh neighborhoods.BikeFest runs Aug. 5-19. ORLANDO, Fla. -- A new 3-D ride based on the "Despicable Me" movie has opened at the Universal Studios park in Orlando.Like the 2010 movie, the Universal ride, called "Despicable Me Minion Mayhem," features the villain Gru (voiced in the movie and on the ride by Steve Carell), his three adopted daughters and the minion characters.Riders enter through Gru's house, pick up 3-D "minion goggles" and are scanned for "human germs" before going off for minion training. The ride includes water sprayers, antigravity rooms, a minion dance party and other features.The ride replaces Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast simulator and uses a sophisticated digital 3-D projection system.Miranda Cosgrove, star of the "iCarly" Nickelodeon show who voices Margo on the ride and in the film, attended the opening ceremony.
