Big winnersCarver Career & Technical Center's ProStart team placed second out of 14 teams at the West Virginia Hospitality and Education Training Hospitality Cup competition recently in Morgantown. Under the guidance of Carver's Chef Thomas Grant and Chef Jeremy Still, executive chef at Edgewood Country Club, the team received a perfect score on its dessert course.Vegan eventA "Meatout" Vegan Potluck will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 21 at Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 520 Kanawha Blvd. Guests should bring a vegan dish and the recipe to share. Amy Williams, Chris Higgins, Hannah Dare Stone and Jennifer Miller will speak. Casey Litz and Marium Bria will provide live music.

Email Robin Snyder at robinsnyder511@frontier.com with questions.Winery tour for fruit farmersWest Virginia State University Extension Service will host an educational vineyard tour aimed at small fruit farmers on March 23. The tour of Kirkwood Winery in Summersville is the first of a planned series of vineyard tours throughout the state.Winery staff members will conduct the tour and provide information on fruit tree maintenance and other aspects of the winemaking industry.The tour costs $40, which includes transportation and the tour. Participants will depart by bus from the WVSU campus at 8:15 a.m. and will stop for lunch before the tour. The bus will arrive back at campus at about 5 p.m.Registration is required.
