HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- "Class Acts -- Earth Wind and Fire," an exhibit featuring the work of Leona Mackey, Vernon Howell and Rabert Fulks, continues through April 21 at Renaissance Art Gallery.Mackey will be at the gallery from 1 to 4 p.m. March 17 to talk about and to demonstrate her glass techniques. A longtime art instructor at Huntington High School, Mackey transitioned from ceramics and painting to dichroic and reactive glass in sterling jewelry pieces. Now she is concentrating on unique fine art works featuring fired glass in stainless steel mounts, either as wall hangings or freestanding pieces. CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Grant Cooper, artistic director and conductor of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, has been in Wellington, New Zealand, this month to participate in the Capital E National Arts Festival, billed as New Zealand's biggest arts festival for children.Cooper conducted the world premiere of a New Zealand Symphony Orchestra/Capital E National Theatre for Children collaboration called "Sky Dancer." The performance included the entire orchestra accompanied by giant projections and puppetry to bring together a mythical tale of epic proportions. BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. -- An encore screening in high-definition of the Metropolitan Opera's live production of "Parsifal," by Richard Wagner, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. March 20 at the Cinemark in the Huntington Mall. HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Illustrator C.F. Payne will talk about his work at 7 p.m. March 22 at the Huntington Museum of Art. Refreshments will be served at the free event.
Payne is the Walter Gropius Master Artist for March. An exhibit of his work hangs through May 5 at the museum.He will present a three-day workshop titled "Step-by-Step Process for Effective Illustration" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through March 24. MABSCOTT, W.Va. -- Theatre West Virginia is holding auditions for its summer productions from noon to 4 p.m. March 30 at its administrative offices in Mabscott.TWV is looking for cast members for its historical dramas, "Honey in the Rock" and "Hatfields and McCoys," as well as two musical productions, "The Wizard of Oz" and "Rocket Boys: The Musical."TWV's season runs June 11 to Aug. 25, with rehearsals beginning in May. Performances take place at Grandview State Park, near Beckley.Those wishing to audition need to prepare 16 bars (30 seconds) of an up-tempo musical number and 16 bars of a ballad as well as a one-minute contemporary monologue. Prerecorded accompaniment is needed; there will not be an accompanist onsite.
