Babcock reopensCLIFFTOP, W.Va. -- The bridge replacement at Babcock State Park is complete and the park is open for the 2013 season.The bridge spans Glade Creek near the park's much photographed grist mill. The bridge provides access to the majority of facilities, including rental cabins, the mill, Boley Lake, the swimming pool and the entire Sugar Camp Run Picnic Area.For the trout stocking schedule of Glade Creek and sites in Fayette County, visit West Virginia fishing licenses and associated stamps may be purchased online at or at a local licensed retailer.Spring SamboreeMINERAL WELLS, W.Va. -- More than 400 people in 140 RVs are expected at the West Virginia Good Sams' spring Samboree May 17-19 at the Butcher Bend 4-H Fairgrounds in Mineral Wells. The rally theme will be "Mayberry RFD."The weekend includes live entertainment May 18, an Aunt Bea fried chicken contest, a Mayberry look-alike contest to decorate the stage, an ice cream social and "Mayberry RFD" movies will be shown.Applications to attend the Samboree may be obtained at the group's website,, or the group's Facebook page, West Virginia Good Sams. During the camping season, chapters meet for monthly campouts.Holly River electricity restored HACKER VALLEY, W.Va. -- Largely without power since October's Superstorm Sandy, Holly River State Park, in Webster County, now has full electrical service restored. Park Superintendent Ken McClintic hopes that both the campground and cabins can reopen by May 3.Telephone service is not restored at this time. Park contact is still limited to one phone at the temporary office. Email is the best way to contact Holly River. That address is park also has been dealing with the challenge of removing fallen trees, brush and other debris from public areas such as the campground, trails and streams. Cleanup of park grounds and trails will be ongoing through much of the summer into fall. Visitors to both Holly River and Audra state parks must be cautious and observant when hiking.Recovery efforts have delayed trout stocking of Laurel Fork at the park. State symbolsCHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The history of West Virginia's state symbols is the subject on a sesquicentennial program April 27 at the West Virginia Culture Center.The event will feature artifacts from the State Museum collection, videos and documentaries in the media room and hands-on projects.
