Bean Stringin' for Manna MealFor the fourth year, volunteers for Manna Meal will buy and string green beans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20 at Capitol Market.Volunteers are asked to buy a pound of green beans to string while listening to music at the Market and then donate the beans to the soup kitchen.Another volunteer crew blanches and then freezes the green beans to serve during the winter.At the stringing, a packet of note cards with photographs of Manna Meal garden will be available for a $15 donation. The donations will support the garden, now in its fifth year of production and providing the soup kitchen with about 3,000 pounds of fresh produce a year.Manna Meal, at St. John's Episcopal Church, serves two meals a day every day to the hungry.Boys and Girls ClubsCharleston area Staples stores are working with a national program that will benefit the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Charleston.Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin for the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive for kids in need.From now to Sept. 28, Staples customers can donate $1 or more at their local Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting students at the Charleston club in time for the new school year.
The local Staples stores to make a donation are at 2810 Mountaineer Blvd., Charleston, and 800 Nitro Marketplace, Cross Lanes.Diabetes education classesThe West Virginia Medical Institute is offering free classes around the state in July to people with Medicare who have diabetes, their families and caregivers.Topics covered will include managing every aspect of diabetes, from nutrition to exercise to important tests and exams.Upcoming classes include:
