CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Coffee shop in Capitol MarketA new coffee shop is opening later this month in Capitol Market.Joe Dangerfield, owner of Musical Grounds European Coffeehouse in Fayetteville, is expanding his coffee shop business. Opus 2 Café will be inside the market near Holl's Chocolates and will offer coffee, tea, smoothies, hot chocolate in addition to homemade (from scratch) muffins, bagels, quiche, soups and sandwiches.  Chili ChallengeOrganizers hope the Wagging Tails Chili Challenge will heat up St. Albans from noon to 3 p.m. on Nov. 16.The inaugural chili cook-off in Olde Main Plaza is a fundraiser for Dog Bless, a local dog rescue group that serves the Kanawha Valley. The cooking competition is sanctioned by the International Chili Society and co-sponsored by St. Albans Riverfest and the City of St. Albans.Under a new ICS category, any combination of ingredients is permitted in the homestyle chili category.   Chili sampling tickets are two for $1. The public can vote for their favorite for the People's Choice award.  The top cooking prize is $500 and a trophy.  The awards ceremony will take place in the historic Alban Theater. The winner automatically qualifies to cook in the 2014 ICS World Championship homestyle chili cookoff.Competition chili to be judged for the chance to qualify for the World Championship must be cooked on site, per ICS rules.  People's Choice chili for public sampling may be made ahead of time and brought to the event.Tents, tables and chairs will be provided to competitors free of charge.  There is no fee to register to cook but competitors must be members of the ICS Homestyle Division, which costs $20 for a one-year membership, payable at the event.

Linda Coulter and Lucas Arthur have been retained as new in-house chefs for Ashton Place Kroger.Coulter was the owner of the now-closed Huck Finn's Restaurant on the Kanawha River in  Dunbar. Arthur was most recently at Guyan Country Club in Barborsville.The Ashton Place Kroger has been undergoing renovations. The opening of the new deli section is planned for Nov. 22.Food events at GreenhouseHURRICANE -- The Greenhouse of Teays Valley will be showcasing six select wines at its tasting, coupled with a five-course food pairing, at 6 p.m. Friday at its shop. Cost is $45 per person.At 7 p.m. Saturday, the Sycamore Ridge Band will perform classic rock favorites while guests enjoy a meal prepared by the Greenhouse Bistro staff. Cost is $35 per person.
To make reservations for either event, call 304-397-6316.The Greenhouse is located at 3554 Teays Valley Road, across from Hurricane City Park. Fundraiser for CAPABLEThe Friends of the Cheat will host a Watershed-Foodshed benefit dinner at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Madeleine's Restaurant in Morgantown.Serving food sourced from farmers primarily in the Cheat River watershed, the event will raise funds to support the CAPABLE volunteer monitoring program, a citizen-scientist based initiative organized by the watershed group. The CAPABLE program is supported by 15 volunteers who monitor year round at select streams and tributaries at risk for degradation due to fossil fuel extraction.Benefit tickets are $50; 70 are available.
