WASHINGTON -- The Smithsonian American Art Museum features "Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage," Jan. 20 through May 20, 2012. The show charts a new direction for one of America's best-known living photographers. She visited the homes of iconic figures including Thomas Jefferson, Emily Dickinson, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pete Seeger and Elvis Presley and photographed many simple and commonplace objects.The "Great American Hall of Wonders" runs through Jan. 8, and examines the 19th-century American conviction that its citizens had a special genius for innovations. The event and a reception are free and open to the public.This year's theme is "A Capitol Affair," chosen because 2012 marks the 80th anniversary of the building's dedication. BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- The due date for entries for the 2012 black-and-white art show at East River Arts in Bluefield has been moved from Dec. 20 to 3 p.m. Jan. 3 at the gallery. The show, "The World of Man in Black and White -- Architecture and Manufacture," is the gallery's annual winter black-and-white show with a special theme, which can be interpreted as broadly as imagination allows. Each entry must include a short statement addressing the relationship between the works entered and the show theme.
Original two-dimensional works in all media will be accepted and all works must be in black and white and reflect human craftsmanship on any scale. No work previously shown at East River Arts or more than 2 years old will be accepted.Entry fee is $15 for up to three entries, or $25 for a maximum of five.
