CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Chelsea worked hard her entire adult life to put food on the table and provide a stable home for her family. She was devastated after a recent divorce cut her income in half, leaving her unable to afford housing for her and her young daughter. She was scared but she knew she had to do something.Mostly, she was embarrassed because she never had to ask for assistance before. She worked harder at her job to make ends meet, but it just wasn't enough. Eviction from her apartment was inevitable -- just weeks before Christmas. That's when Chelsea's friends suggested she go to the Covenant House, which helps find assistance for Charleston's most vulnerable. The organization also works to feed and clothe the homeless or those on the verge of homelessness.A caseworker at the organization was able to find federal funds designated to assists those suffering from the current economic downturn. With that funding, Chelsea was able to maintain her fulltime job, pay for rent and her utilities without worry. She is no longer embarrassed because the Covenant House's assistance gave her and her daughter a stable home for the holidays.
