State asks Marshall to reconsider razing arena

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The state Historic Preservation Office is trying to save the Veterans Memorial Field House in Huntington from being torn down.

Built in 1950, the Field House is scheduled to be razed this year to make way for a new Marshall University soccer stadium complex.

The Herald-Dispatch reports that the preservation office has asked Marshall to reconsider demolishing the arena and including it in the soccer complex plans.

Documents provided to the newspaper by Marshall say restoring the Field House to basic functionality and reconfiguring the space would consume the soccer project's $5.4 million budget.
