Shell to build ethane cracker plant in Pa., not W.Va.

Kanawha officials pin hopes on second cracker

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia officials today were trying to make the best of an announcement that Shell chemical had picked a site in Pennsylvania for construction of a multi-billion-dollar natural gas "cracker" plant.

I could be wrong, but the tone of Mr. Burdette's comments leads me to believe that WV is not the chosen site.

As gossip hungry as we are I would think word would have spread if WV got it before an official announcement. As the article states, it doesn't completely matter what state the plant ends up going, jobs are going to be filled by people in all three states, not just WV or whoever gets it, plus it will spur a regional economic boom of sorts with satelite companies popping up all over, not necessarily in the state of the plant.

Maybe now the Construction Unions in the AFL-CIO won't have to worry about all those 'out-of-state' License Plates @ the new 'Cracker' Plant.

Well, this is good news for the gazette, now they can whine about not getting the plant, but on the other hand, if it had been built here, they now won't have the opportunity later on to whine about the damages it is causing.

Tomblin and the WV Good Ol Boys that he took to Texas must not have been very impressed with them and of the anti-business climate in WV! So much for Tomblin's reelection campaign that said he has brought 20,000 new jobs to WV! Shell is not dumb, they could see thru him and I'm sure they researched the anti-business climate before making their decision! NO TOMBLIN IN 2012

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction.....

We get NONE of the crackers starting up to locate in state....but ALL of them, that we have a shot at, will be within 20 miles of our state borders.

They want our resources. They want our people and their work ethic .... they want absolutely NO PART of our anti-business environment in West Virginia. Locating "close" to WV borders give them access to the two things they want, and no part of what they wish to avoid.

The rest of the "where are we gonna locate" hoopla was and will be merely to get the best tax break possible form PA/OH ... which ever state wins ... in this first case, it was PA.

Quick note ... on forbes "best states for business list"

    PA ... ranked 26
    OH ... ranked 38
    WV ... ranked 43.

    Coincidence? I think not.

So much for Tomblin's touting his procurement of 20,000 new WV jobs for his Frackin Crackin Plant! Shell must not have been very impressed with Tomblin and his crew, I'm sure they did their homework about WV's anti-business climate and their standings on all Good Nat'l Statistics! Another F for WV and Tomblin today!

Nothing will change until our laws change .... and our laws/tax structure won't change until we vote those who have been in power for the last 80 years(Democrats) out of office.

Democrats OWN this mess, they created it, they have perpetuated it. The few Republican gov's we have had have all been mostly lame ducks because dems have owned both chambers for 80+years.

So no single election would have changed anything ... we need a complete govt change.

With the political history of Burdette-Tomblin-would you want to deal with these two for direction of a ethane cracker plant if you represented Shell chemical ?

These two Burdette and Tomblin would be perfect as rednecks in a movie such as Deliverence. Squealing in the woods.

Hilarious dcwv! If this isn't sarcasm, then it has to be a big part of the reason for this decision. The typical WV voter. Democrats good, Republicans bad. Same story for the past 60 years. (see below)

Although it means nothing to everyone here, inside scope from the oil/gas industry says final decision was heavily based on the state's legal climate (see Mike's stats).

We've been hearing for quite some time the union line that "local workers should get local work." I guess that means that no WV union worker will go to Pennsylvania to work on the ethane cracker since that would take "local work" away from the Pennsylvania "local workers."

Will be interesting to see how Tomblin spins this. First no comment on voter fraud and now takes a big blow. This was his home run for the election and the might KC struck out.

Do you blame them? WV has got to be one of the least business friendly states there is, thank you democrats. We are too tax heavy on businesses. I am going to close mine at the end of this month, the stupid democrats in this state has taxed me out of existence.
