CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A former Pocahontas County sheriff's deputy has been indicted for allegedly sexually abusing four children and one adult woman over a period of 10 years.A Pocahontas County grand jury returned a 12-count indictment Tuesday against Bradley C. Totten, of Hillsboro.The indictment alleges Totten, a former sheriff's deputy, forced four juvenile girls and one adult woman to have sex while in the line of duty. The adult was allegedly forced to have sex while incarcerated, the indictment says.West Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said the indictment was the result of a lengthy investigation by First Lt. R.J. Simon of the West Virginia State Police and a special agent for the FBI.Baylous did not know if all of the alleged victims were sexually assaulted while in Totten's custody, but all were allegedly forced to engage in sexual activity while Totten was on the job.According to the indictment, Totten allegedly forced two juveniles to perform oral sex on him, forced one to allow him to perform oral sex on her, forced another to touch him and touched a fourth juvenile with his penis through her clothing. He also allegedly forced an adult woman to have intercourse with him while she was in jail, according to the indictment.None of the alleged victims were relatives or family members, Baylous said.
Totten was indicted on one count of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of second-degree sexual abuse, three counts of third-degree sexual abuse, six counts of sexual abuse by a custodian and one count of attempted first-degree sexual abuse. The incidents allegedly occurred between May 1999 and April 2010.Totten has not been arraigned on the charges.Baylous said the FBI and State Police continue to investigate. Baylous said other potential victims are urged to contact their local State Police detachment or the FBI.Totten no longer works as a Pocahontas County deputy, Baylous said.According to The Associated Press, Totten, 40, was a deputy for more than 10 years.Reach Rusty Marks at firstname.lastname@example.org
