More than 200 West Virginia eighth-graders awarded the Golden Horseshoe

Dozens of eighth-grade students from all around West Virginia gathered on the steps of the state Capitol on Thursday afternoon before the annual Golden Horseshoe Award ceremony. The award is presented to students who do very well on a test measuring knowledge of West Virginia's history and culture.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 200 West Virginia eighth-graders were presented with the Golden Horseshoe Award for outstanding performance on the test measuring students' knowledge of the state's history and culture.Students who received the award on Thursday were inducted as knights and ladies of the Golden Horseshoe Society. The induction ceremony was held at the state Culture Center.The Golden Horseshoe originated in the early colony of Virginia when Gov. Alexander Spotswood saw the need for exploration of the land west of the Allegheny Mountains, most of which is now West Virginia. Spotswood presented each member of the exploration party with a golden horseshoe to commemorate the venture.The Golden Horseshoe test has been administered in West Virginia each year since 1931 and is the longest-running program of its kind in the United States. The top-scoring students in each county receive the prestigious award.
