NITRO, W.Va. -- Nitro Mayor Rusty Casto tearfully handed the gavel over to the newly elected Mayor Dave Casebolt at the end of the regular council meeting Tuesday night.Casto said after the meeting how deeply appreciative he is "to the citizens of Nitro for letting me be their mayor for 16 years. I dearly love everyone in our city and wish the very best to the new mayor and council coming in, that they'll do a great job for our city and thanks from the bottom of my heart.""We can accomplish nothing without the help of everyone," Casebolt said after the meeting. "We need [citizens'] buy in."Council members certified the results of the Municipal Election of June 11 at Tuesday's meeting.
Also, council members approved a revised contract for the city's fire department, which is expected to take effect the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1."It's a good platform," Councilman Craig Matthews said."It proves that the city and the fire department can work together to achieve a common goal," firefighter Casey Mathis said.According to Matthews, the contract will be active for three years.Finally, bids were opened for street paving and the demolition of two buildings on separate properties in the city. Both were sent to committees for further analysis.
