'Battered But Not Broken' rescheduled because of storm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Cynthia Wilson's play "Battered But Not Broken" was to have its world premiere Thursday in Charleston. However, because of the damage caused by Friday's devastating storm, it has been rescheduled. The play is about a child who grows up witnessing domestic violence and later becomes a victim herself. It is being produced by Atlanta-based Shelly Garrett Entertainment; Garrett is a veteran theater producer, director and playwright best known for his play "Beauty Shop," which has produced numerous updates, as well as film and TV adaptations, since it premiered more than two decades ago.Wilson said the decision to reschedule was made Sunday."When the governor declared a state of emergency, I called around to see how many people were without electricity," she said. "I was affected. Mine was off, and the hotel where Shelly and [his cast and crew] were staying was off. There was nowhere to get gas or water."It just became inevitable."
Performances are now scheduled for 8 p.m. Aug. 24, and 3 and 8 p.m. Aug. 25. That's fewer than the four-day, six-show run originally planned, but Wilson said those are the dates the Civic Center has open. She added that those shows might be the only chance for folks to see the play locally. "We're going on the 50-city tour [next year], and it's not really likely that we'll bring the show back through Charleston."Tickets already purchased for this weekend's performances will be honored on the new dates. Tickets purchased for Thursday's and Sunday's shows can be exchanged for any of the three August performances.Ticket exchanges must be made at the Civic Center Box Office. Refunds can be obtained there, as well, if that's where tickets were purchased. Those who purchased tickets online or by phone must go through Ticketmaster for a refund.Wilson estimated that 2,000 tickets already had been sold. The Civic Center Little Theater has a capacity of 733 people per performance.Reach Amy Robinson at flipside@wvgazette.com.
