WVU Healthcare offers Elkins video stroke care

ELKINS, W.Va. -- West Virginia University neurologists are teaming up with Davis Memorial Hospital to offer video-based plans to help develop treatment strategies for patients who suffer strokes.

WVU Healthcare said in a news release Thursday that the so-called Tele-stroke partnership allows WVU neurologists and Davis Memorial staff to treat stroke patients, share imaging scans and intravenously administer clot-dissolving drugs.

WVU neurologist Claudette Brooks said in a news release that many state residents live in areas that aren't served by neurologists, and the Tele-stroke program can help them gain access to care. Brooks said most hospitals have the proper clot-busting drugs in their emergency rooms but they may hesitate to administer them because they don't have staff neurologists to consult.
