Putnam woman gets prison time for embezzlement scheme
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Putnam County woman was sentenced to three years and one month in prison Monday for embezzling more than $700,000 from her former employer.Georgiana Ciavarello, 40, admitted to stealing the money from Quail Ridge Construction Company between September 2007 and November 2010, while she worked for the company as a bookkeeper, according to a media release from U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin's office.
U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers also ordered Ciavarello to pay slightly more than $1 million in restitution for the amount of the embezzled money, unpaid taxes and Social Security benefits she received as a result of the scheme, the release states.Ciavarello would negotiate employee per diem checks for cash. She also failed to pay income taxes from 2007 to 2010, totaling about $216,000. Chambers sentenced her to more prison time than federal sentencing guidelines call for, according to the release.
