CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Putnam County woman admitted Tuesday to embezzling $380,000 over several years from a Charleston law firm.Terri Kay Workman, of Hurricane, pleaded guilty to six counts of embezzlement for manipulating financial records at Bucci Bailey and Javins and cashing company checks that she had the authority to make out to herself.
"I started out small and I didn't get caught," Workman said Tuesday during her guilty plea hearing before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Duke Bloom.Workman, the office manager for the firm, said she wrote checks to herself every month for amounts ranging from $800 to $1,200. She also racked up more than $60,000 in debt on company credit cards, she said.
Kanawha County assistant prosecutor Fred Giggenbach said that after Workman left the job, the new office manager discovered the fraudulent transactions. She faces up to 60 years in prison when she is sentenced next month.
