Charleston man stabbed on East End

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston man was stabbed early Friday on the city's East End.Eric Desmond, 37, told police he was walking to the store at about 1:40 a.m. when he stopped at the intersection of Elizabeth and Washington streets, East to count the money in his wallet, according to Sgt. Eric Hodges of the Charleston Police Department.Desmond told officers another man, later identified as Granville Smith, 47, of Rand, walked up and engaged Desmond in conversation, Hodges said.
Hodges said Desmond told police he went to put his wallet away, but dropped his banking card on the street. He told police he looked back to see Smith putting the card in his own wallet.When Desmond asked Smith if he had his banking card, Smith allegedly slashed at Desmond with a knife, cutting him on the neck, Hodges said.Desmond was taken to CAMC General Hospital for treatment, Hodges said. Smith was captured a short time later and charged with malicious wounding. He was being held without bond Friday at the South Central Regional Jail.
