Police seek person of interest in West Side slaying

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police are looking for a Charleston man they said might know more details in the shooting death of a man on the West Side last month. The man, Everett Hunter, 23, also is wanted for a felony aiding and abetting crack distribution charge in Kanawha County.Charleston Police Sgt. Bobby Eggleton said they'd like to talk with Hunter as a person of interest in the fatal shooting of John Allan Rogers Jr., 37.A passer-by discovered Rogers' body Aug. 11 splayed across the railroad tracks near the Madison and Wyoming streets intersection. Police said he had been shot at least once in the head at about 1 a.m.Rogers had an address listed in Rand but was staying with his girlfriend on the West Side. It appeared Rogers had been with his killer for some time before the shooting and an argument had taken place, Eggleton said.Eggleton believes Hunter is a witness to the shooting or has some knowledge that could help detectives make an arrest. The two men were acquaintances.Detectives interviewed Hunter shortly after the shooting but it's unclear if they learned anything from him. Others at the scene provided police with little information, Eggleton said.
Rogers' slaying is not thought to be drug related, even though he had a history of selling cocaine and previously served time in a federal prison.Eggleton said Hunter possibly left the area to dodge the pending drug charges. His last known address was on Sixth Street in Charleston.Hunter is described as a black male about 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds."His cooperation or anybody that knows anything about this case would be much appreciated," Eggleton said.Anyone with information is asked to call Charleston Police's Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480.Detectives have investigated three homicides in Charleston this year. Four people were killed in Charleston in 2011. In 2010, there were 11 slayings, two of which remain unsolved.Reach Travis Crum at or 304-348-5163.
