Trial delayed in CAMC shooting

By Staff reports
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A judge has agreed to postpone the trial for a woman accused of shooting her husband to death as he was recovering from an illness at CAMC Memorial Hospital.Lawyers for Rhonda K. Stewart told Kanawha Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman Wednesday that the defense team needed additional time to bring in an expert to test the gun allegedly used in the 2009 shooting. The trial, which was originally scheduled for early next month, will likely be moved into next year. Kaufman will hold a hearing within the next few weeks to determine an exact trial date, assistant Kanawha County prosecutor Tera Salango said. Salango said prosecutors objected to the motion because they believed Stewart's lawyers have plenty of time to get the gun tested before October. Stewart is currently on home confinement. The time she spends out of prison will count as time served if she is ultimately convicted in her husband's killing, Salango said.
