Eastern Panhandle staging mock flood emergency

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Eastern Panhandle officials are warning residents not to worry if they see a lot of emergency response activity this weekend.Officials in Jefferson, Morgan, Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Grant and Mineral counties are all participating in a regional disaster exercise Saturday that's built on a severe flooding scenario. There will be river rescues as the counties simulate a dam release on the Potomac River after the remnants of an imaginary hurricane move through the Mid-Atlantic.
At the height of the flooding scenario, there will be a problem with the Jennings Randolph Lake Dam, which borders Mineral in West Virginia and Garrett County in Maryland.
The exercise is a follow-up to a tabletop drill conducted earlier this summer by West Virginia Homeland Security Region 3.
