Train excursion from Roanoke to Bluefield canceled

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Following three years of successful trips, an Amtrak train excursion from Roanoke, Va., to Bluefield is being discontinued.Officials with the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Society say ticket sales have declined in the past year.
And while Bluefield has been a popular train excursion destination, officials believed passengers were looking for more variety.The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports ( ) that area National Railway Society officials say they'll be diversifying excursions by traveling to Abingdon, Va., and Shenandoah, Va., from Roanoke this year.Officials say the Roanoke train excursion also has encountered some competition from larger train excursions like steam locomotive trips by Norfolk Southern from Roanoke to Bristol, Va., and then out of Williamson as well.
