More dam releases sought for Fayette whitewater

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- A coalition of outfitters and other groups says increasing water releases from Hawks Nest Dam would create more than 5 miles of new whitewater in Fayette County. The Wet The Dries Coalition is seeking a study of the economic impact of such a project. Coalition members include West Virginia Professional River Outfitters, the New River Clean Water Alliance, Plateau Action Network and the Hydropower Reform Coalition. The dam's license is coming up for review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
The Register-Herald says the Fayette County Commission agreed last week to write a letter to the federal agency in support of study. But the commission didn't endorse or disavow the proposal. The dam diverts much of the New River through a tunnel underneath Gauley Mountain to a hydroelectric plant.
