Highland gets $35 million loan for Clarksburg project

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- Highland Hospital has secured $35 million in loans to convert the former United Hospital Center in Clarksburg into a mental health facility.

Clarksburg City Manager Martin Howe says that includes $13.8 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and $21 million from two banks, according to the Exponent-Telegram. Howe serves on the Highland-Clarksburg Hospital's board of directors.

Highland is planning a $29 million, 150-bed facility that will employ about 250 people.

Fairmont General Hospital fought for two years to stop the Clarksburg plan but settled with Highland in June.

Fairmont will be designated a primary referral hospital for the William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital in Weston. That means if the state needs to divert patients, it will call Fairmont first.
