Workers at Follansbee coke plant want new contract
FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. -- The United Steelworkers and Mountain State Carbon's owners will meet Friday to try to negotiate a new contract.
Mountain State was a joint venture between Severstal and the now-bankrupt RG Steel.
WTOV-TV says that bankruptcy wiped out the old contract.
Steelworkers Local 1190 President Ernie Gambellin says the parties have met three times in six weeks, and that's too little time to make a deal. Gambellin says he's not confident that meaningful negotiation is occurring.
Severstal hired 200 people to keep operations going at the Follansbee plant after the bankruptcy. But Gambellin says it's not running at full capacity, and the current workers are at-will employees. That means they can be let go at any time for any reason.
The plant manager declined comment on the talks.
