Flags lowered to honor former US Sen. Specter

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Flags at state facilities are being lowered in honor of former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennslyvania.In accordance with a presidential proclamation, West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin ordered all U.S. flags to be lowered from dawn to dusk Tuesday, the day of Specter's funeral.
The 82-year-old died Sunday at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.Tomblin already had ordered the lowering of state flags Tuesday in honor of Basil L. Plumley. The West Virginia native's exploits as an Army infantryman were portrayed in a book and the movie "We Were Soldiers."
