Bicycle safety event to include helmet giveaway

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- To help save grade-school children from injury, the Pilot Club of Charleston will have a free public Bicycle and Brain Safety event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Capitol Market.Youngsters age 6 to 12 will be given helmets, T-shirts, activity bags and safety information packets. A Charleston police bicycle patrol officer is to talk with children and their parents.
The Capitol Market program is part of the 22nd annual Make A Difference Day, America's largest volunteer event. Across the nation, thousands of groups, businesses and individuals conduct a wide variety of people-helping efforts each year on a Saturday in late October.The Pilot Club of Charleston, chartered in 1940, is among 500 such clubs with 13,000 members. It engages in volunteer work, financial gifts and scholarships. Preventing brain injury is a special focus of the Charleston group. It also sponsors flags at Haddad Riverfront Park.
