Kanawha voter office computers down for 90 minutes

By Staff reports
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Computers at the Kanawha County Voter Registration Office were down for about 90 minutes Friday afternoon during the third day of early voting. Those who had their voter registration cards were easily able to get a ballot. Otherwise, employees called the secretary of state's office to verify voters' ID numbers, precincts and signatures, according to Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick. At least one man alleged that he was turned away and was told that he had to present his voter registration card.
After realizing that fixing the computer problem would take longer than anticipated, McCormick instructed employees to verify information with the secretary of state's office."If it was just going to take three or four minutes [to fix], we would have just asked people to wait," she said.McCormick said employees are instructed to never turn anyone away. "We would have at least let them vote a provisional ballot. We don't turn anyone away," she said. "They might just not have wanted to wait, because we asked them to wait just a couple of minutes until we could find out what was going on, and then we did the best we could."
