Family needs new roof, home repairs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- After he suffered a heart attack while in his 30s, David was diagnosed with other health problems that ultimately disabled him. Now that he is unable to work, he and his wife Paula struggle to pay the bills with his disability checks. The couple is also raising David's high-school-aged daughter, Sabrina, and Paula's pre-school aged-granddaughter, whom they took in because neither of the girl's parents was able to care for her. Union Mission in Charleston is helping the family. The family's monthly income consists of David's disability, $262 for Paula's care of her granddaughter and food stamps. The couple needed their roof replaced and the ceiling in one of their bedrooms was falling in. They also needed a new kitchen sink. While David's brother can do the repairs, the family needs an estimated $850 for materials. If the money is not raised, the family will face a winter season with inadequate living conditions.
