CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Deputies arrested a Charleston man they said broke into a home several times early Wednesday and attempted to steal multiple items.Police are currently interviewing the man's wife to determine the extent of her involvement in the alleged theft. The pair could be connected to other burglaries throughout the county, police said.Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputy J.A. Ferrell was dispatched to a burglary-in-progress call at 3311 Kanawha Boulevard East in Charleston at about 2:30 a.m., according to a news release issued by Capt. Sean Crosier.Ferrell arrived and found glass from the home's front door had been broken. He then instructed the elderly homeowner on the phone to barricade herself inside her bedroom for safety. As Ferrell monitored outside, he saw the suspect wearing dark-colored clothing and gloves walking out the front door, Crosier said. The suspect, later identified as Thomas Alvin Hager Jr., fled through a bushy area nearby when he spotted Ferrell.
Ferrell chased Hager and attempted to restrain him to handcuff him. Hager then kicked Ferrell in the face and mouth, Crosier said. Hager was eventually handcuffed and placed inside Ferrell's patrol car.Ferrell learned that Hager assaulted the 71-year-old homeowner after smashing through a door that she was hiding behind. She received minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.Hager was charged with nighttime burglary and assault during the commission of a felony.Security footage at the home showed a man and woman carrying many items to and from the house, Crosier said.Deputies executed a search warrant at the Budget Host Inn at 3313 Kanawha Boulevard East, where Hager and his wife had been staying, and allegedly recovered property reported stolen during other thefts in the county.Detectives were interviewing Hager's wife Wednesday night and additional charges will be forthcoming, Crosier said.
