Author at librariesCHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Daniel Boyd will talk about his experiences in compiling, publishing and promoting the graphic novel "Chillers" at 6 p.m. Jan. 14 at the St. Albans branch library and at 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Dunbar branch library."Chillers" was based upon the movie of the same name that was written and directed by Boyd. "Chillers" was just nominated for a Shel Dorf Award for best original graphic novel of the year.West Virginia ReadsCHARLESTON, W.Va. -- In celebration of West Virginia's sesquicentennial, Kanawha County Public Library joins the state Library Commission, West Virginia Center for the Book and other libraries and bookstores for the West Virginia Reads 150 reading challenge. The program encourages reading in the community while honoring the state's 150th birthday.
Teams of up to 15 members will read a total of 150 books throughout 2013. Each team picks a name and selects a leader to keep track of books read by the team. Team members report each book read to the team leader.All ages can participate. Families can use the challenge to promote reading at home. If a team member is too young or unable to read, books read to them can be counted. Books must be read between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013.Participants in the library's summer reading clubs can count those books as well. The library will provide reading suggestions and team updates in various ways throughout the year.Teams may be registered for the challenge by filling out a registration form, available at any KCPL location or from its website, Program details, frequently asked questions and registration information can be obtained from the website.Children's authorCHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Local author John M.H. Pratt has published his first book, a children's picture book titled "The Magic Window." The book may be obtained at Taylor Books, Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Kindle.
