CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- As the number of flu cases continues to rise, the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department is offering extended clinic hours for vaccinations. The health department offers flu vaccinations daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. without an appointment. On Monday, Jan. 14, and then again on Jan. 23, the clinic will be open until 6 p.m. for flu vaccinations.Health officials are urging those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so."There are adequate supplies of flu vaccine available at this time," Dr. Rahul Gupta, executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, said in a prepared statement. "With increased flu numbers in schools, day care centers, and long-term care facilities, it is very important to protect yourself and those close to you from influenza.
"Flu is often seen as a disease that takes its biggest toll on at-risk populations with poor immune systems such as children, the elderly and those with chronic health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and a weakened immune system."Vaccinations can take up to two weeks before they're effective. The flu season typically peaks in January or February and can last until May, Gupta said. For more information about flu clinics, call the health department at 304- 344-5243 or visit its website at
