Winter storm dumps up to a foot in southern part of state

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Most of West Virginia was spared the brunt of a winter storm but the southern part of the state saw up to a foot of snow.The National Weather Service reports today that portions of Mercer County and the Bluefield area received 11 to 12 inches of snow, while Summers County recorded 10 inches.
Four to 6 inches was reported southeast of Beckley, while up to 6 inches fell in McDowell County.Appalachian Power reports nearly 5,000 customers without power. Most are in Monroe, Mercer and McDowell counties.
