Dunbar raises mayor, city clerk salaries

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Dunbar City Council members agreed to raise the annual salaries of the next mayor and the city clerk for 2013.Dunbar Mayor Jack Yeager said he proposed the idea last month and it was approved Tuesday night.The city's budget permits a $3,000 raise for those positions. That increase would take effect after the city's election winners take their seats in July, he said.The mayor currently takes home about $38,000, and that's would increase to $41,000. The city clerk earns $36,000 and that would increase to $39,000.Earlier Tuesday, Yeager told the Gazette he would not seek re-election in March. During that election, he said, residents would vote to extend the police and fire department levies.Also during Tuesday night's meeting, council members gave the go-ahead for the Shawnee Senior Center to apply for a grant to purchase a new van. The center in Institute is combined with the Dunbar Senior Services. They have one van but it's old and senior center officials are in need of a newer one, Yeager said.
