Upper Vandalia Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Putnam County Board of Education office in Winfield, weather permitting. A guest speaker will be featured. Pictures will be collected for the second pictorial history book. Bring a friend or prospective member. Refreshments will follow the meeting. West Virginia State University Extension Service will host two cold-frame construction workshops for gardeners. One workshop will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 31 at the Barnett Center, 1524 10th Ave., Huntington. The second is offered from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 1 at the School of Harmony, 159 Granby Circle, Beaver. Cold frames are enclosures with transparent roofs that allow plants to still receive sunlight while shielding them from excessive moisture or cold temperatures. Their function is similar to that of a greenhouse, extending the growing season through the winter months. The class costs $40 and includes a cold-frame kit. Registration is required by contacting Brad Cochran, extension associate, at 304-541-3301.KISRA's West Virginia Pathways to Responsible Fatherhood Initiative is calling all dads to a Super Bowl Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Southridge Grand Prix Center, 500 Southridge Blvd. Dads, stepdads, granddads, uncles and other father figures are invited to bring their kids to the fun-filled event.
