Gas, coal drive Marshall County property value rise

By The Associated Press
MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. -- Total property value in Marshall County is expected to increase more than half a billion dollars for the 2013 tax year.Assessor Chris Kessler attributes the increase mainly to the natural gas industry's investments in new processing facilities, wells and pipelines.
Also, coal operators' investments have increased the value of mines and preparation plants. The increases in industrial property values have offset a decline in the assessed value of owner-occupied residential property.Kessler says the assessed value of all property is expected to total slightly less than $3 billion for the 2013 tax year. That's nearly double the total in 2007. The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register reports that Kessler discussed the increases Tuesday during a meeting of the County Commission sitting as a Board of Review and Equalization.
