Solid Waste Authority considering new director

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Members of the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority will have a special meeting next week to narrow down the search for a new executive director. The authority has been without a full-time director since Norm Steenstra resigned last summer. Interim Director Jeannie Gunter recently said she was stepping down to return to running the Solid Waste Authority's business office.Authority officials have gotten 14 applications for the position, with a 15th expected, members of the solid waste board were told at a meeting Tuesday.Members of the board agreed to review the applications and meet again next week. Each member will then pick their top three candidates for the job in an attempt to narrow down the list of potential directors. Also Tuesday, board members got a progress report from private contractor George Hunyadi, whose West Virginia Recycling company took over operation of the Slack Street recycling center last month.
Solid Waste officials decided to form a public-private partnership to run the county's recycling program. Under the agreement, West Virginia Recycling will run the recycling center, while the role of the Solid Waste Authority will be primarily promotional and educational.Hunyadi told members of the solid waste board that he has run all the machinery in the facility personally, inspected the grounds and walked the layout to better understand and plan how to best run the recycling center. Slack Street has already sent a few loads of paper and cardboard out.But Solid Waste Authority board member Greg Sayre asked several questions about the fledgling program's employment and business practices. Hunyadi conceded that in his haste to get the facility up and running, he neglected to fill out some required state paperwork. However, Hunyadi said he now has a valid West Virginia business license, and is working out insurance, payroll and Workers' Compensation issues for the new company's employees. Hunyadi said all required state paperwork should be completed soon.Reach Rusty Marks at or 304-348-1215.
