CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- It looks as if Rep. Shelley Moore Capito will be the only Republican member of Congress running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jay Rockefeller.First District Rep. David McKinley indicated Friday that he will not run for the Senate seat.
McKinley spokesman Jim Forbes initially said that McKinley would not run, then said that McKinley "has not officially" said he would not run, but that he "probably wouldn't."On the Democratic side, former Gov. Gaston Caperton and former Sen. Carte Goodwin, who served briefly following the death of Sen. Robert C. Byrd, have said they will not run for the seat.
Capito, who represents the 2nd District, announced that she would run for the Senate seat on Nov. 26, before her current term in the House of Representatives began. On Jan. 12, Rockefeller, D-W.Va., announced that he would retire after five terms in the Senate.
