CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Members of the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority hope to hire a new director by April 1.The authority has been without an executive director since former director Norm Steenstra resigned in July. Interim director Jeannie Gunter, appointed to take Steenstra's place, announced last month she was stepping down to work as the authority's business manager.Solid Waste Authority officials got 16 applications to fill the position from around West Virginia and surrounding states. At a meeting Tuesday, members of the Solid Waste Authority's governing board cut the list in half."We got so many good applicants that we can't narrow it down without seeing them," said board member Rod Watkins. Solid waste officials decided to call the top nine applicants in for 15 to 20-minute interviews beginning next week.
After interviewing the candidates, solid waste officials hope to narrow the list down to three or four before making a final decision. Also Tuesday, the solid waste board voted to lease 800 square feet of vacant office space at 210 Brooks St. in Charleston. The Solid Waste Authority has been meeting at the business office of the Slack Street recycling center, but that space technically now belongs to West Virginia Recycling, which took over operations of the center earlier this month.Solid waste officials are still negotiating the rent for the new office, but hope to move in before their next meeting.Reach Rusty Marks at firstname.lastname@example.org or 304-348-1215.
