Army veteran, Nitro Elementary student chosen to detonate bridge

NITRO, W.Va. -- A 92-year-old World War II veteran and an elementary school girl were chosen by lottery Tuesday night to detonate the remaining portion of the Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge.Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt said the city held a drawing for one child and one adult to be selected during Tuesday's night council meeting.Tomas Walls, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Europe and Africa, and Jessica Taylor, a student at Nitro Elementary School, were chosen.
Casebolt said Walls was thrilled by his luck and Taylor hadn't been told yet Tuesday night."I think every kid in Nitro signed up," Casebolt said.The demolition will be Friday morning. Police and Division of Highways officials would meet to discuss traffic and safety, he said.
