Traffic across the bridge over the Kanawha River between South Charleston and Dunbar has been heavier since another area bridge was closed earlier this year. By closing the South Charleston-Dunbar bridge completely at night, state highways officials hope to complete an inspection of the bridge.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Contractors and state highways officials have again changed the inspection schedule for the former Dunbar Toll Bridge between South Charleston and Dunbar. As a result, the bridge will be completely closed at night next week.Planners had originally wanted to close one lane of the bridge during the day for about two weeks so contractors could conduct a regularly scheduled bridge inspection. But the bridge is one of the detours across the Kanawha River while the Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge between St. Albans and Nitro is closed for replacement."We had a lot of complaints and concerns about it," state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carrie Bly said.DOT officials have been adjusting the closure schedule to try to find an arrangement that works best.Bly said officials had decided to try closing one lane of the bridge at night, but have now decided to try closing the bridge down completely at night next week. Contractors hope the new schedule will allow them to finish the inspection sooner. The new schedule is:
| This week, one lane of the bridge will be closed between 10 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday, and again from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.| This weekend, one lane of the bridge will be closed between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.| Next week, the bridge will be completely closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Friday. For information about the bridge closures, call 1-800-642-9292.Reach Rusty Marks at email@example.com or 304-348-1215.
